Is Buffalo airport worth the drive from Toronto?
Cheaper US fares against a border crossing and ninety minutes of highway. When the Buffalo run genuinely pays, and when it quietly does not.
Buffalo Niagara International is one of our most requested destinations, and for a straightforward reason: fares out of the United States on some routes are meaningfully cheaper than the equivalent from Pearson. The question is whether the saving survives the drive, the crossing and the extra time. Sometimes it does. Sometimes it very much does not.
When it works
It works best when you are travelling as a group. The car costs the same for one passenger or four, so the fare saving multiplies while the transport cost does not. Two people saving a few hundred dollars each on a transatlantic ticket will comfortably cover the ground transport; one person saving forty will not.
It also works when the routing is genuinely better — a direct flight from Buffalo against a connection from Toronto is worth more than the money, because a missed connection costs you a day.
When it does not
It does not work when you are travelling alone on a cheap fare, when your flight is early on a Friday or a US holiday weekend, or when you have not left margin for the border. A queue at the Peace Bridge is not a rare event; it is a normal Friday afternoon. No operator can promise you a border wait, and any operator who does is guessing with your flight.
Which crossing
There are two realistic options from the Golden Horseshoe: the Peace Bridge at Fort Erie and the Lewiston-Queenston bridge north of Niagara Falls. They queue differently and they queue at different times. Our chauffeurs check the live wait before committing, which is a small thing that occasionally saves an hour.
Paperwork, plainly
- Every passenger needs their own valid travel document. A parent cannot travel on a child’s behalf.
- A child travelling without both parents needs a consent letter from the absent parent or parents. Border officers do ask.
- Anything you are carrying that would need declaring at customs still needs declaring. Being in a chauffeured car changes nothing about that.
We tell you all of this when you book, not at the bridge. The quoted fare includes the bridge toll.
The honest summary
Buffalo is a genuinely good option for groups, for better routings, and for anyone with time in hand. It is a bad option for a solo traveller chasing a small saving on a tight schedule. If you tell us the fare difference and the number of passengers, we will tell you honestly which side of that line you are on — including when the answer costs us the longer booking.
