Hamilton or Pearson? For the Golden Horseshoe it is not obvious
For anyone west of Toronto, the bigger airport is not automatically the better one. The trade is fare choice against an hour of highway.
If you live in Burlington, Oakville, Hamilton or Niagara, the reflex is to book out of Pearson because that is where the flights are. Sometimes that is right. Often John C. Munro Hamilton International is quietly the better arrival, and we will say so even though it is the shorter fare for us.
The case for Hamilton
- It is close. From Burlington or Hamilton it is a short run rather than an hour on the QEW.
- It is small. The walk from the aircraft door to the car is minutes, not a terminal hike plus a train.
- It is calm. There is no equivalent of the Pearson departure-bank crush.
- Arrivals are quick. Bags come off fast and the kerb is right there.
The case for Pearson
Route choice, frequency and price competition. Pearson is a major international hub and Hamilton is not; if you need a specific long-haul routing or a same-day alternative when something goes wrong, Pearson has options Hamilton cannot match.
How we quote it
For clients in the western Golden Horseshoe we will price both if you ask. The Pearson run is the longer journey and the larger fare, so treat a recommendation for Hamilton as what it is — the option that is genuinely better for you on that trip.
The third option
For US destinations, Buffalo enters the conversation from Niagara and south Hamilton, with a border crossing in the middle. Details on the Hamilton airport page and the full airport list.
