Toronto to Buffalo airport: the crossing is the whole trip
Ninety minutes of highway and an unpredictable bridge. How we plan the run, which crossing we choose, and the documents that stop it going wrong.
Buffalo Niagara International is one of our most requested destinations, because fares on some US routes are meaningfully cheaper than the equivalent from Pearson. The driving is easy. The border is the part that needs planning.
Which bridge
The two realistic options are the Peace Bridge at Fort Erie and the Lewiston-Queenston bridge further north. Wait times at the two can differ enormously at the same moment, and your chauffeur checks live conditions before committing rather than defaulting to one. That single decision is often worth more than any other part of the trip.
When it is worst
Friday afternoons, Sunday evenings, long weekends and the US holiday calendar — which is not the same as the Canadian one, and catches people out. If your flight is on one of those days, we build in materially more time.
Documents
- Every passenger needs their own valid travel document. A booking under one name does not cover the group.
- Children need appropriate consent paperwork where they are not travelling with both parents.
- Know what you are carrying. Food, alcohol and gifts all have rules, and "I did not know" is not a fast conversation at the booth.
What is in the fare
The bridge toll is included in the quoted price. The crossing time is not something anyone can guarantee, which is exactly why we quote the trip with a margin rather than a best case.
Is it worth it
With a group, frequently yes — the car costs the same for one passenger or four while the fare saving multiplies. Alone, often not. We worked through the arithmetic in is Buffalo worth the drive, and the route detail is on the Buffalo transfer page.
