Tipping your chauffeur in Ontario: the honest answer
It is discretionary, it is not built into our fare, and nobody will behave differently either way. Here is what people actually do.
This question comes up constantly and gets answered badly, usually by operators with an interest in the answer. So, plainly: gratuity is at your discretion, it is not included in our quoted fare, and no chauffeur of ours will behave differently depending on whether you offer one.
What people generally do
Broadly in line with tipping norms for other personal services in Ontario, with a bit more where the chauffeur has genuinely done something beyond the drive — a long wait handled gracefully, help with a difficult amount of luggage, a route problem solved without fuss.
Where some operators are less transparent
A number of companies build a mandatory gratuity into the fare as a percentage line item. That is a legitimate model provided it is disclosed, and it becomes a problem when a customer then tips again on top without realising. If you are comparing quotes, check whether gratuity is already inside the number.
On a corporate account
Usually handled through the account rather than in person, precisely so the traveller is not doing arithmetic at the kerb. Your account terms will say.
If you would rather not
That is entirely fine and it is not awkward. The chauffeur is properly paid for the work; a gratuity is a bonus, not a wage subsidy.
Something better than a tip
If a chauffeur did well, tell us their name. It goes on their record and it matters more to them than the cash. Use contact, or reply to your confirmation email.
